Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney will take centre stage at next year's Super Bowl, to entertain fans during the half-time show, it was announced today.

Sir Paul will perform in front of a global audience of millions during the break - which many in the US regard as much of an attraction as the game itself.

"There's nothing bigger then being asked to perform at the Super Bowl," he said.

"We're looking forward to rocking the millions at home and in the stadium."

The sport's governing body, the NFL, picked Sir Paul as a safe act following controversy last year, when Janet Jackson exposed a breast during the prime-time performance.

Her fellow performer Justin Timberlake who tugged at her outfit, causing the bustier to rip away, memorably called it a "wardrobe malfunction".

The incident last February prompted hundreds of thousands of complaints to broadcaster CBS and sparked a new debate in the United States about standards on TV.

CBS was fined nearly 300,000 dollars by the Federal Communications Commission for the slip-up.

Steve Bornstein, the NFL's executive vice president of media, said: "We are extremely pleased to work again with Paul McCartney, one of the greatest musicians of our time, to create a memorable show.

"As one of the world's most beloved artists and incomparable live entertainers, Paul McCartney will deliver an inspirational performance."

It is not the first Super Bowl performance for Sir Paul, who appeared to sing a duet with Terry Bradshaw two years ago in New Orleans.

The Super Bowl is the most-watched television spectacle in the United States, and attracts phenomenal advertising revenues.

Nearly 145 million people in the US alone watched the game - and half-time entertainment - last year.
