Margot Robbie’s "snub" from the Best Actress category at this year’s Oscars has prompted a tongue-in-cheek response from a local Australian police force who said they are “investigating” the Academy.

Notable figures such as former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and actor Ryan Gosling have voiced their support for Robbie as well as Barbie director Greta Gerwig, who wasn’t recognised in the Best Director category.

Queensland native Robbie not only leads the cast but also serves as a producer for the film, which has garnered eight nominations in other categories and achieved a remarkable $1 billion at the global box office.

Following the nominees announcement on Tuesday, Victoria Police hilariously weighed in on the furore and claimed the star was “robbied”.

The authorities cheekily wrote on their Facebook: “POLICE INVESTIGATE AS MARGOT ROBBIED”.

“Police are investigating after a former resident of Ramsay Street was allegedly robbed of an Oscar nomination for best actress,” they penned, referencing her former role on the Australian soap, Neighbours.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to remind all current residents of Ramsay Street and the rest of Victoria, to consider reporting any non-urgent crime, such as theft, via our online reporting tool.

“It’s a convenient and easy way to submit a report with us any time of day.”

Robbie featured as a series regular on the long-running drama from 2008 to 2011 before she landed her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Aussie actress has previously earned Oscar nominations for I, Tonya (2017) and Bombshell (2019).

While Robbie's portrayal as Barbie wasn’t recognised, the film was and earned a Best Picture nomination, acknowledging her role as a producer alongside the LuckyChap Entertainment team.

Victoria Police's post comes after Gosling spoke about his disappointment that Gerwig and star Robbie were snubbed in two major categories during the Oscars nominations.

The actor, who was nominated for his supporting role as Ken in the box office juggernaut, said he was “so happy” for co-star America Ferrera who received a nod for best supporting actress for her performance as Gloria.

Gerwig was snubbed for a best director nomination, but was named alongside her husband Noah Baumbach for best adapted screenplay while Robbie lost out on a best actress nomination but was recognised for best picture as a producer.

“I am extremely honoured to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” Gosling said in a statement shared with US outlets.

“And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.

“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

Gosling described it as an “understatement” to say he is disappointed that Gerwig and Robbie were not nominated in their respective categories.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

“Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees,” he added.
