Mia Wasikowska has spoken about how much she enjoyed returning to the role of Alice in the sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland.

The Australian born star is back as the titular character in Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is based on the book of the same name by author Lewis Carroll.

In the video above Wasikowska says that she liked how “[Alice] is in a really empowering position [in the film]” and that “she has a very strong sense of who she is.”

Alice’s new adventure begins with her back in the real world where, Wasikowska says, “expectations of her are really low.” However “she holds onto that sense that she’s worth more than that” and soon returns to Wonderland.

Wasikowska is joined in the film by returning cast members Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Anne Hathaway, as well as newcomer Sacha Baron-Cohen who takes on the role of Time, the antagonist.

Director James Bobin says he cast Baron-Cohen as he was keen to bring the “absurdist, surrealist element a bit more to the fore” and that the Ali G actor is “really funny.”

Alice Through the Looking Glass is in cinemas now.
