Disgraced designer John Galliano has been sacked from his own label following his alleged racist and anti-Semitic tirades.

His contract as head designer for Christian Dior was terminated shortly after the claims emerged six weeks ago, but he had kept his role at his eponymous label. Today it was announced that Dior, which owns 91 per cent of John Galliano, had handed control to its in-house fashion team.

It is believed Dior has no plans to sell the brand. In June, Galliano, 50, is to stand trial in Paris on charges of "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity". If found guilty he faces up to six months in prison. He is said to have spent the last few weeks in a rehab facility in Arizona.

In February, Galliano allegedly told Geraldine Bloch, 35, at La Perle bar in Paris: "Dirty Jew, you should be dead." He is then said to have told her boyfriend, Philippe Virgitti, 41: "F***ing Asian b******, I'm going to kill you." A video then emerged of Galliano in an allegedly similar incident at La Perle last year. He is seen telling two Italian women: "People like you ought
to be dead, your mothers, your forefathers would all be f***ing gassed. I love Hitler."

Galliano denied any wrongdoing, saying: "Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I apologise for my behaviour."
