Just weeks after bracketing himself alongside golfing legend Tiger Woods, most people would have expected golfer Ian Poulter to keep his head down for a while until it had all blown over.

But the British golfing eccentric obviously has other ideas.

A month on from his ill-judged comments the British number four was spotted taking his own typically brash brand of fashion to the fairways.

Dressed in a tight-fitting gold lamé shirt and brown trousers with orange etchings at a tournament in India, he looked more like a jaffa cake than a golfer - and his latest bold fashion statement won't have endeared him to those who believe he should just let his golf do the talking.

Speaking to Golf World magazine last month, the world no.22, who has never won a major golf championship, amazed his fellow pros with the bold claim that he was one of the best two golfers in the world.

"The trouble is, I don't rate anyone else," Poulter said, dismissing the talents of, among others, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson, each of whom has won three majors.

"Don't get me wrong," he bragged. "I respect everyone who is a professional. But the problem is I know I haven't played to my full potential yet.

"And when that happens, it will just be me and Tiger."

Today, he tried to draw a line under the controversy.

"They were headlines but I think if everybody had read the six pages first of all, then there wouldn't have been any issue," said the 32-year-old.

"To be honest, I've had a lot of comments from that and people who have read the whole article have said that they don't know what the problem is.

"It was a day of banter with the boys, to be perfectly honest with you. I got a lot of stick from the lads but that's been about it. It's all in the past and now it's fish paper.

"More importantly, I'm practising hard and trying to get my game in shape for the tournaments coming up."

Ian Poulter is playing in the £2.5million Johnie Walker Classic 2008 in Gurgaon on the outskirts of New Delhi.

Poulter's unique sense of style first brought him to the attention of the golfing world - for the wrong reasons - in 2004 when he wore a pair of garish Union Jack trousers for the Open.

Ian Poulter's latest fashion disaster is no one-off occurrence. The golfer has a history of wearing appalling trousers
