The nine-word pitch - sell a movie in under a sentence - looks like a case of verbal incontinence in this case. 'Car stunts' was probably enough. The Fast And The Furious is the opposite of the recent Swordfish, a hardware-heavy actioner without heart. This has too much bloody heart - dead dad, love-across-the-lines, jealousy - and not enough nitrous-fuelled illegal street racing.

The thoroughly engaging Vin Diesel and the thoroughly vacant Paul Walker compete on the streets, while Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez - a girl with a mouth that could degrease a high-lift camshaft - are perfect as the girls who like oily rags.

Verdict: Brrrrooom.
