A trailer for the forthcoming Rogue One will debut this week during the Rio Olympics.

Star Wars fans have just a few days to wait as the second trailer is set to drop in the US on Thursday evening and in the UK early on Friday morning.

The follow-up trailer is expected to give fans their first proper look at Darth Vader as well as characters played by Felicity Jones, Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted the trailer announcement on NBC and shared it on Twitter before production company LucasFilms could make the official announcement.

“I'm such a nerd im so excited to see the #Olympics on Thursday solely for the #RogueOne trailer #StarWars #Rio2016,” wrote one person.

Another person posted: “Just saw the #RogueOne commercial for the trailer (sigh) for Thursday and am very excited.”

The official Star Wars account then confirmed that the trailer would be shown in its entirety during the network’s Olympics coverage.

“See the premiere of the new #RogueOne trailer during Olympic coverage this Thursday,” read the post.

New footage of the eagerly-anticipated film was shown during the Star Wars Celebration Europe Panel last month, but is yet to be released online.

Rogue One, which will be released in December, is set in between films Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

The spin-off tells the story of a group of rebels who attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released in UK cinemas on December 16 2016.
