From Jonathan Ross to the late John Peel, these are the most influential broadcasters of the past 25 years - and beleaguered Capital breakfast host Johnny Vaughan is not among them.

Jonathan Ross has made the shortlist as one of the most influential broadcasters of the past 25 years

Today host John Humphrys, Radio 2 legend Terry Wogan and even northern motormouth Chris Moyles all make the shortlist, compiled by the Sony Radio Academy.

The 25-strong line-up will now be put to a vote of current broadcasters to pick the most influential of all.

Virgin Radio breakfast host Christian O'Connell is among those listed.

Sony Academy chairman Tim Blackmore said: "Christian came on to radio and made it his own. He's introduced a new style of doing music radio which is very carefree, not trying to be anything in particular or to adopt any format.

"He is considerably more distinctive than someone like Johnny Vaughan."

Vaughan recently lost the title of London's most listenedto breakfast DJ to Jamie Theakston on Heart FM.

His predecessor, Chris Tarrant, is included for his "enormous enthusiasm and energy".

The winner will be announced next month.
