Art lovers are in for a treat this week.

At long last, Charles Saatchi opens his private collection to the public in a new 40,000 sq ft exhibition on London's South Bank.

Among the contemporary wonders on display will be Damien Hirst's 17-foot Australian tiger shark suspended in a glass tank filled with formaldehyde.

Also on show are Tracey Emin's 'My Bed' and Ron Mueck's 'Dead Dad'.

All of the 2,000 paintings, sculptures and installations at County Hall have been selected by Saatchi himself, who is aiming to introduce new art to a wider audience.

A special space within the gallery called the Boiler Room has been devoted to the work of emerging new artists where new exhibitions can be explored every six weeks.

  • The Saatchi Gallery opens Thursday, April 17, at County Hall, Southbank, London, SE1 7PB. Call 020 7823 2363 for more information. Nearest Tubes: Waterloo, Westminster.
