Forget the statuettes. This year’s Oscars were all about selfies, photobombs … and takeaway pizzas.

Ellen DeGeneres, hosting the awards for the second time, roped her A-list audience into a series of stunts, beginning with the most retweeted picture of all time. At one point Twitter crashed, as the photograph was retweeted 2.4 million times — and counting. Bradley Cooper helped her take the most star-studded of selfies, featuring Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o and Angelina Jolie.

The one not-so-recognisable face belonged to Nyong’o’s brother Peter, her date for the evening. Liza Minnelli stood on tiptoes at the back of the group as she desperately tried to get into the picture, but was too short to make the frame.

DeGeneres made up for it — and an earlier joke about Minnelli looking like a male impersonator of herself — by taking a second selfie with the actress.

Later, the 56-year-old host ordered pizza for everyone in the auditorium, and roped in Pitt to hand out paper plates. He and Spacey were seen happily tucking in, before DeGeneres tried to get guests including producer Harvey Weinstein to help foot the bill.

Her performance was well-received by audience and critics, who welcomed her safe but cheeky script after Seth McFarlane’s savage turn as host last year, which was widely panned. The photobomb of the evening came from Benedict Cumberbatch, who leapt out behind U2.

Fall of the night belonged to Lawrence, who took a tumble on the red carpet. Last year she fell as she went to collect her Oscar.
