Singer Whitney Houston has temporarily put off three concerts at the start of her UK tour while she recovers from an infection.

Too sick to perform: Whitney Houston

The 46-year-old was due to take to the stage at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester tomorrow and Friday, with a Sunday performance in Glasgow at the SECC.

The dates have been re-scheduled and the star's UK tour is now set to start at the Birmingham LG Arena next Tuesday.

The singer, who has sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos, has been dogged by ill-health while attempting her big comeback.

A statement issued on Houston's behalf said: "With great disappointment, Whitney Houston has postponed her first three concerts in the UK due to illness...

"Doctors visited Whitney late last night in Paris and confirmed that she was suffering from an upper respiratory infection.

"Upon medical advice Whitney has been advised that she cannot perform to allow her time to recover."

Houston had been on a hiatus from music as she battled drug addiction and ended a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

But with her new album, I Look to You, she has been riding high once more and declared herself healthy and free from substance abuse.

The Glasgow concert has been rescheduled for May 1 while the Manchester dates will take place at the end of the tour on June 16 and 17.

Houston's Nothing But Love show is billed as being packed with some of her greatest hits including Saving All My Love and It's Not Right (But It's OK).

I Look To You became her fastest-selling album in the UK, and has already shifted more than 2.5 million copies.

Concert promoters Marshall Arts have asked ticketholders for the Manchester and Glasgow performances to retain their tickets, which will remain valid.

Organisers said those unable to make the re-scheduled shows should apply to their point of ticket purchase for a refund.

They added that all other dates on Houston's Nothing But Love World Tour 2010 will be unaffected.
