Hollywood actor Christian Slater has filed for divorce from his wife of five years.

Slater lodged documents in Los Angeles Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences" with Ryan Haddon. Court papers show he wants joint custody of his two children.

The couple announced their separation two weeks ago. It was reported that Slater, who was starring in the West End in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and his wife had fought over her inability to settle in London. After he moved out of the family home he was seen at various nightclubs and lapdancing venues.

Slater and Haddon, a TV producer, once fought so fiercely he needed stitches to a wound behind his ear. Haddon, 32, allegedly hit her husband with a glass. She was jailed briefly but no charges were brought.

Slater, 35, wants equal access to his children - five-year-old son Jayden and three-year-old daughter Eliana. His publicist said: "The mutual decision was reached amicably and they remain committed to raising their two young children together." However, there was speculation that Haddon would file separately for divorce in London.

Slater is a former Hollywood hellraiser. He received a threemonth prison sentence in 1997 for assaulting his then fiancèe and a police officer while under the influence of cocaine.
