X Factor winner Steve Brookstein tonight topped the UK charts after pledging to donate all proceeds from his debut single to the Asian tsunami relief effort.

His cover of Phil Collins' Against All Odds ended Band Aid 20's four-week reign at number one with Do They Know It's Christmas?

Steve's single, which went straight into the charts at number two last week, is now the 998th ever number one UK single.

Simon Cowell, who was Steve's mentor on ITV1's X Factor, said sales of Against All Odds would generate several hundred thousand for the relief fund.

He said earlier: "The cost to Steve will be a few thousand, but he didn't even think about it, he said, 'absolutely, I want to do it'."

It is the second time that a cover of Against All Odds has topped the charts in recent years. Westlife and Mariah Carey took the ballad to number one in September 2000.

Former pub and club singer Steve scooped a £1 million recording deal when he won the ITV1 talent show.

But he will face strong competition for the number one spot from the King himself, Elvis Presley.

Record company SonyBMG is re-releasing all of Elvis's 18 number ones to mark the 70th anniversary of his birth.

They will hit the shops on consecutive weeks, starting with Jailhouse Rock and a collector's version of All Shook Up which both go on sale tomorrow.

The Elvis singles' timely release means the King is tipped to notch up the UK's 1,000th number one.
