ITV sports presenter Steve Rider is said to be in talks about his future following Adrian Chiles's dramatic defection to the broadcaster.

Chiles's new ITV job, understood to be worth around £1 million a year, will see him front GMTV and present ITV's football coverage in a four-year deal.

Business meeting: Steve Rider is in talks over his future

The 43-year-old, who has been a familiar face on The One Show and other BBC programmes, will lead ITV's World Cup coverage in June, including England's two peak-time opening games.

From next season the exclusive ITV deal will see him fronting the Champions League, England's home internationals and away friendlies, as well as the FA Cup.

Rider, who turns 60 this month, joined BBC Sport in 1985 and was a familiar face at the corporation for 20 years, fronting more than 700 editions of Grandstand as well as covering several Summer and Winter Olympic Games for the BBC.

ITV football anchor Rider's current deal is reportedly due to end this year, although ITV said it did not discuss contracts.

Asked about plans for Rider in the light of Chiles's move, a spokesman for ITV said today: "We're talking to Steve about future options."

Chiles was said to be unhappy at Chris Evans being drafted in to host the Friday night edition of The One Show.

He fired a parting shot in the corporation's direction as he announced his move yesterday.

He said: "I would have been happy to stay at the BBC doing the same shows on the same terms, especially The One Show, of which I am so proud, having worked on it since the first pilots four years ago.

"It's no secret how disappointed I was by the Controller's decision to change an apparently successful and well-loved show at this stage, but fully respect her right to do so and sincerely wish her and the brilliant One Show team well with it."

Chiles is seeing out his contract with the BBC, which has a month left to run.

Rider's agent was not immediately available for comment.
