Even after nearly 48 years, you still get the feeling that Ken Barlow sometimes thinks he is a cut out for better things than Weatherfield.

And it appears that William Roache, who has played "clever Ken" since Coronation Street began in 1960, also once hankered after an opportunity to spread his wings.

So, given the chance in a fashion photoshoot for TV Times magazine in 1970, the then 37-year-old came out with all acting guns firing as he threw himself into the roles of brooding pilot, debonair golfer and moody motorcyclist.

While the photographs never made it to publication, Roache, now 75 and still working seven days a week, recalls the time fondly.

He said: "I remember doing this shoot and it being a lot of fun, it was very nice being asked to do such a fun shoot.

"It's great that I was able to get away with it back then when I was a bit slimmer."
