As his alter ego Jack Bauer, of the hit TV show 24, Kiefer Sutherland is very familiar with being 'all out to sea'.

Luckily on this occasion the fate of the Free World is not at stake, and neither are any Presidents at risk of assassination.

Instead the 41-year-old actor was on a break from filming and went for a paddle in Malibu, California, over the Labor Day Weekend.

The actor returns to the small-screen with a two-hour 24 TV-movie this November -  which tells the back-story between the events of season 6 and season 7 of the Fox show - before the premiere of 'Day 7' next January.

Having coped with a nuclear strike in LA, the killing of one of his close friends, and finding out family-members were behind the assassination of a President, it would seem Jack Bauer was due a day off.

But sadly the former Counter Terrorist Unit agent is is due another 'worst day of his life', with rumours suggesting he will find himself fighting terrorism in Africa and finding out a long-believed-dead friend is still alive and out to get him.

Luckily the actor had nothing more gruelling to worry about than catching the best waves.

The actor has had an up-and-down 12 months. He is regularly cited as one of the most hardest-working actors in television, and is known for his commitment to performing as many stunts as he can and taking on an executive producers role for the Fox show. He has also continued his film career, including 2006's The Sentinel and 2008's Mirrors.

However he was arrested for drink driving last September and spent Christmas and New year in jail, which in part led to 24's seventh season being delayed for a year along with last summer's writer's strike.

However after his release in January the actor is now free to work on his career and, as these pictures show, also his body.
