X Factor host Dermot O'Leary has hit back at the controversy surrounding judge Cheryl Cole's refusal to vote off one of her acts at the weekend.

Ofcom and ITV have so far received more than 1,000 complaints after Cole abstained, which meant Treyc Cohen was voted off by her fellow judges and Katie Waissel was saved.

O'Leary said producers had already decided they would take a majority vote if Cole refused. He said: "We thought it might happen before the break when we found out who was in the bottom two. We decided if she wasn't going to vote we would go to the majority verdict."

Fellow judge Dannii Minogue backed Cole's decision. Speaking at the Pride of Britain Awards last night, which all of the judges attended, she said: "To tell you the truth, I probably would have done the same. It's very hard to invest yourself in your category and then pit them against each other."
