The fireworks aren't the only bangers worth looking out for this Bonfire Night. If you fancy getting your teeth into some good old traditional comfort food, we present a round-up of the top five restaurants that will have you 'ooh-ing and aah-ing' at their sizzling sausage and mash...

  • S&M (Sausage & Mash) Cafe268 Portobello Road, W10 020 8968 8898. Mon-Sun, 11am-10pm. £36 This celebration of the greasy spoon caff the S&M sausages all come with credentials concerning their content, and are served with mash made from potatoes or other roots. They even have a gravy menu. The porkers arrive Desperate Dan style, rearing up from a mound of mash liberally doused with gravy. Daintier diners can order items such as Italian sausage with salad of rocket and Parmesan or grilled chicken sausage on Caesar salad. There are also branches in Islington and Old Spitalfields Market; for details, e-mail s&mcafe@pinkfish.net.
  • Green's36 Duke Street St James's, SW1 (020 7930 4566) Mon-Sun £100 The sausage used at this restaurant is a noble variety - it might be the case that Norman Parkinson's blend, Porkinson's, has been replaced by Prince Charles's Duchy Of Cornwall variety (Charles's Aunt Margaret was an appreciative customers of Green's) and sticking to sausages has a beneficial effect on the bill.
  • Hellenic 30 Thayer Street, W1 (020 7935 1257) Mon-Sat £50This simple Greek/Cypriot restaurant which has been trading for well over half a century is one of the few places that still offers 'gueridon' service - food cooked beside the table over a spirit lamp. A potent Greek sausage, loukanika, is included in the meze and the home-made sheftalia sausages are also worth a sample.
  • Ma Goa244 Upper Richmond Road, SW15 (020 8780 1767). Mon-Sun 6.30pm-11pm, Sun 12.30pm-3pm and 6pm-10pm. £50Goan sausages are rich, meaty and seasoned with palm vinegar, cinnamon and plenty of green chillies - a world away from the British breakfast sausage. The Goan sausages are a popular starter in this family-run restaurant and are almost worth a visit in themselves.
  • Simpson's-in-the-Strand100 Strand, WC2 (020 7836 9112). Breakfast Mon-Fri 7.15am-10.30am.Unfortunately there's no mash on the menu but you will get a rather more upmarket sausage experience for your money. The breakfast is expensive, but it's the real thing, with decent sausages and fried eggs lying in wait for anyone who jibs at kippers.
