There's more to American fast food than McDonald's. From the sky-high burgers at the Eagle Bar Diner to the piles of oak-smoked ribs at Bodean's, we give you our pick of the best places to head if you want a taste of Uncle Sam...

  • Christopher's18 Wellington Street, WC2E. Tel: 020 7240 4222Christopher's is probably the smartest restaurant in London serving American cuisine. The décor is elegant and contemporary and the menu changes seasonally. Highlights include excellent fishcakes, blackened ribeye, clam bakes, lemon tarts and pecan pie and the ground-floor bar is just as worthy of a visit for its superb cocktails.
  • Eagle Bar Diner3-5 Rathbone Place, W1T. Tel: 020 7637 1418Tucked away a few doors down from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, this trendy diner is the perfect place to refuel during a mammoth shopping spree. Customers tuck in to sky-high burgers in high-backed green booths and the choices range from the classic to the rather more exotic emu or kangaroo burger. The cocktails are excellent and the peanut butter and banana milkshake is not be missed.
  • Lucky 7127 Westbourne Park Road, W2. Tel: 020 7727 6771Tom Conran's hip diner is tiny - just six booths with wood veneer tables and vinyl banquettes - but it's worth squeezing in for a taste of his short but very sweet menu, which includes creative options include crab-meat burgers or bean burgers with toppings such as salsa or avocado.

Tel: 020 7287 7575Probably the best barbecue in town, Bodean's has a built-in rotisserie with 15 barbecue racks where ribs, steak, fish, chicken and sausages can gently inhale oak, apple or cherrywood smoke until they're moist and tender. Upstairs is a fast-food/take-out operation, all half-net curtains, tall stools and no-nonsense above-the-counter menu board. Downstairs is old-school Manhattan rib room: tartan carpet, antler lamps and butch carvings of the animals you're about to eat.
  • Arkansas caféUnit 12, Old Spitalfields Market, E1. Tel: 020 7377 6999This restaurant "shack" is situated on the edge of Spitalfields Market is justifiably popular. Its Arkansan owner, Bubba, slaves over the barbecue pit, serving-up piles of tender beef, pork ribs and superb steak sandwiches to his ravenous customers.
