EastEnders stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace were crowned the king and queen of soapland at the TV Quick Awards.

Wallace was voted best soap actress for her role as fiery barmaid Kat Slater. And Richie walked away with the best newcomer award for playing lovelorn landlord Alfie Moon.

Viewers have been hooked by the couple's will-they-won't-they romance - rumoured to result in a wedding next year.

EastEnders made it a hat-trick by scooping the coveted best soap award for the third year running.

But it was also a good night for ITV's Coronation Street, thanks to evil Richard Hillman. Actor Brian Capron won best soap actor while Tricky Dicky's reign of terror was named best soap storyline.

The star-studded awards ceremony was hosted by Lily Savage star Paul O'Grady at the Dorchester Hotel in central London.

There was a double win for Bad Girls - the prison saga was voted best loved drama and Claire King, who plays prison boss Karen Betts, won best actress.

Best actor went to Cold Feet star James Nesbitt, who had the nation in tears with his portrayal of grieving husband Adam after wife Rachel (Helen Baxendale) was killed in a car accident.

Ant and Dec had two reasons to celebrate - best entertainment show for Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, and best reality show for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

Channel 4 ratings winner Wife Swap won best factual programme and Bargain Hunt scooped best lifestyle show.

My Family was named best comedy, William And Mary won best new drama, and This Morning pipped GMTV to the post by just two votes to win best daytime show. E4 was voted favourite digital channel for its winning mix of Friends, ER and Sex And The City.

Brian Capron was clearly thrilled to win and joked: "I'd like to thank my co-stars - so a big thank you to my shovel, my crowbar and my glove."

Shane Richie laughed about receiving a Best Newcomer award after 25 years in the business.

He dedicated his win to his two children, his partner and his ex-wife Coleen Nolan.

But he forgot to thank co-star Jessie Wallace and when she went up to collect her award she told the audience: "I was going to mention Shane Richie - but he didn't mention me so sod him."

Stars who attended the ceremony included cast members from EastEnders, Coronation Street, Bad Girls, Changing Rooms and Hollyoaks.

Changing Rooms designer and I'm A Celebrity contestant Linda Barker stole the show in a lime green vintage ballgown.

Fame Academy students Alex, Carolynne and Peter were there along with tutors Carrie and David Grant.

Also enjoying a glitzy night out were Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? cheats Major Charles Ingram and wife Diana.

The disgraced couple are soon to star in a celebrity version of Channel show Wife Swap.
