The shelf life of Top Of The Pops darlings is short: the road to obscurity cruel. But some bounce back from potential breakdown and Woolworth bargain bins to hit our radiowaves spinning records instead...

1. Boy George

Back in his Culture Club days, Mr George was the eyeshadowed tortured pop king. Now, he's king of glam happy handbag house and has headlined Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Cream... you name it, he's played there.

2. Norman Cook

From The Housemartins, sporting a dodgy quiff, through brief notoriety with Beats International, the Fatboy is now Britain's most recognisable DJ. That has nothing to do with his other half - it's his music that counts.

3. Marc Almond

A true 1980s icon with pint-sized pixie features and a chart hit that still rouses karaoke excitement. He's now throwing bootlegs and beats together, and recently played Pearl Necklace at Redstar.

4. Howard Donald

Poor Take That's Howard: no one fancied him, his dancing was erratic and his hair should have been banned. Maybe he became a DJ to earn some cool points. But appearing on a documentary about Faliraki really doesn't do the image much good now, does it?

5. Mr C

Ex-frontman for post-rave chart crossover group The Shamen, Mr C is now a producer, remixer, DJ and co-owner of The End. Not bad for a man whose CV should include shouting very loudly to crass songs and the ability to grimace even when happy.
