On the road: Top Gear is ready to take on US

The show will air on the History channel and is being made by BBC Worldwide Productions.

Those behind the the US version promised it will be packed with "high-adrenaline action entertainment" - as well as "Top Gear's customary wit and humour".

Ferrara has been a regular on talk shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman.

Foust's movie credits include The Bourne Ultimatum, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, while Wood has owned more than 40 cars.

Top Gear's Bolivia special, which originally aired on BBC2, was the most popular iPlayer TV show over Christmas, receiving more than a million requests.

The show revved into action in the UK in 1977 and is consistently BBC2's most-watched programme in the UK.

Celebrity guests have included Dame Helen Mirren, Hugh Grant, Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsay.

Top Gear reaches more than 150 million households globally and made its stateside debut on BBC America in 2007.

The new US show went into production this week and will air in the autumn.
