David and Victoria Beckham received an early welcome to the United States when their wax doubles went on display, draped with the stars and stripes.

Madame Tussauds in New York unveiled the celebrity couple to the strains of Neil Diamond's America last night, in honour of their upcoming move to Los Angeles, where David has signed a five-year contract with LA Galaxy.

Decked out in American flags, the Beckhams are joined by a wax figure of President Bush holding a sign reading: "Welcome to America."

The figures have been imported from Madame Tussauds in London and will remain on display in New York for two weeks.

The couple stand arm in arm, with David dressed in a black tuxedo and Victoria wearing a pale green sparkling evening gown.

Visitors are encouraged to embrace and kiss the figures, as well as take photos.

Janine DiGioacchino, general manager of Madame Tussauds New York, said: "We are very excited to give visitors a chance to get up close and personal with Posh and David Beckham.

"Posh and Becks are celebrity icons in England and already on the path to superstardom in the United States."

A previous display of the Beckhams at Madame Tussauds in London attracted controversy when they took starring roles in a celebrity nativity scene.

The pair played Mary and Joseph, while Tony Blair, George Bush and the Duke of Edinburgh made up the three wise men.

But a Vatican spokesman said the display was "in very poor taste", and law lecturer James Anstice later appeared in court after attacking the figures in protest.
