Football star Jonathan Woodgate gambled £1.8million while recovering from injury, it is reported today.

The £70,000-a-week Real Madrid player, who was out of action for 17 months, is said to have gambled through a phone account with Ladbrokes.

Sources claim the ex-Newcastle and Leeds star made a net loss of about £150,000 betting on horse racing and football games.

Woodgate, 25, who has played for England, usually staked between £1,000 and £5,000, and his biggest win was £30,000.

A friend told the Sun: "He got into bigtime punting when injured. He liked watching sport on TV and being able to phone up to bet. He's done pretty well and is only down the equivalent of two weeks' wages."
