A real Reo-choker as Fergie has bad day at the offce

14 April 2012

Alan Curbishley repaid Sir Alex Ferguson for convincing him to take the reins at West Ham by helping to slash Manchester United's lead at the top of the Premiership to just two points. Under- fire Hammers captain Nigel Reo-Coker scored the only goal to give former Charlton boss Curbishley, making his managerial debut at Upton Park, a first ever win over his good friend.

The victory throws the title race wide open, coming after Chelsea had narrowed the gap on United with a dramatic 3-2 win over Everton.

Jose Mourinho's men had to come from behind twice at Goodison Park, eventually snatching victory with a stunning late strike from Didier Drogba.

Reo-Coker's 75th-minute goal at West Ham was the perfect way to silence those who have accused him of being the main conspirator behind Alan Pardew's departure from Upton Park a week ago.

Booed by some sections of his own support before and after the game, Reo- Coker dedicated his goal to his former manager.

Asked what he would say to Pardew, Reo-Coker replied: "That one is for you, gaffer.

"I can't put it into words what the win means to me. It has been such a stressful week, not just personally, but for the team."

Curbishley said: "We were desperate for the win. The results yesterday were a big blow. To see teams pull away from us was a blow - we've just clawed some back and it was great to do it against Manchester United."

Ferguson conceded it had not been a good day for his team. He said: "We are now two points clear when it could have been more. That was a fantastic result for Chelsea, but I was disappointed that we did not take our chances against West Ham.

"We didn't deserve to lose, but we've come here at a time when there is a great upsurge of energy. Their fans were great. If they played like that every week they wouldn't be in the position they're in."

Chelsea boss Mourinho praised his players for their persistence in crushing the resistance of a stubborn Everton side.

He said: "When everything is shining and blue skies and flowers it is great. But when it is not like that, it is important to show your character.

"We did that today and it doesn't matter what the gap is going into our next game, we showed what we are about.

"We all want to play great music all the time, but if that is not possible, you have to hit as many right notes as you can."
