Agassi rises on Nasdaq

14 April 2012

Defending champion Andre Agassi cruised into the fourth round of the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Max Mirnyi, of Belarus.

The fourth-seeded American will now face Agustin Calleri, of Argentina, who beat Australia's Todd Reid 6-4, 7-6.

Meanwhile, second seed Andy Roddick had to pull out all the stops to beat Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and Spanish fifth seed Carlos Moya was also taken to three sets before beating Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

"It feels good," said Agassi. "Days like this are few and far between so I definitely feel great about the performance but I'm experienced enough to know how quickly things can turn around."

In the women's event, title holder and top seed Serena Williams made light work of a tricky-looking fourth-round test when she beat Russian Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 6-3. Playing only her third match since returning from an eight-month lay-off, Serena defeated the 16-year-old in one hour 15 minutes.

"I was a bit sloppy but confidence-wise I feel like I'm getting better with every match," said Serena. Her elder sister Venus, the second seed, enjoyed an even smoother passage into the last eight, seeing off Italy's Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-3.
