Akinbiyi to have knee operation

13 April 2012

Crystal Palace striker Ade Akinbiyi, already a doubt for the World Cup, will now undergo a knee operation.

Akinbiyi twisted his knee in Palace's final game of the season against West Brom, aggravating an old injury.

He has been left out of the Nigeria squad for a friendly against Kenya on Saturday and is unlikely to recover in time for their final warm-up game against Jamaica at Loftus Road on 18 May.

Spain midfielder Pep Guardiola will miss the World Cup finals for the second time in succession through injury.

The 31-year-old former Barcelona captain, now with Brescia, has ligament damage to his right knee.
