Anderson hands England great start

James Anderson confirmed his love of Trent Bridge as he gave England a sensational start to the fourth NatWest Series match against Sri Lanka.

On the ground where he took 11 for 71 against Pakistan in last summer's Test series, Anderson (three for 14) took his one-day international tally to 14 in Nottingham - the best by anyone at this often swing-friendly venue.

Sri Lanka's top order had no answer to him, and Tim Bresnan also chipped in by shifting Mahela Jayawardene cheaply, as the tourists descended to 11 for three at one stage after being asked to bat first in this day-night fixture. By the 10-over mark, Anderson had already struck a third time - leaving Sri Lanka 29 for four and very much up against it to post a testing target.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was first to go, for a fourth-ball duck, via a thin edge behind as Anderson immediately found swing and away movement off the pitch in his first over.

Jayawardene cut Anderson for four in his next over but was undone at the other end by Bresnan, edging another that left him low to Jonathan Trott at slip.

Young number three Dinesh Chandimal then achieved cricket's hero-to-zero feat, following his match-winning unbeaten Lord's hundred three days ago with a duck when Anderson got one to hold its line and pin him lbw pushing forward.

Thilina Kandamby became the fourth consecutive departure for a single-figure score when he followed exaggerated movement off the seam to be caught at second slip by Graeme Swann.

Much therefore depended on Kumar Sangakkara, who was joined by a promoted Suraj Randiv and responded with a crunching extra-cover drive for four off Bresnan.
