Virginia Wade thinks Andy Murray could operate without a head coach.

The British No1 is expected this week to confirm that Amelie Mauresmo will stay on as head coach after a trial period during his unsuccessful grass-court season.

However, Wade believes that Murray picked up enough from his previous coach Ivan Lendl to do the job himself if needed.

“I think it was very optimistic to think she [Mauresmo] could have an impact in a couple of weeks before a major tournament,” the former Wimbledon champion told BBC Radio 5Live. “I feel that he learned so much from Lendl that it is not that essential that he actually has somebody telling him what to do.

“He needs to implement all that himself. He has a great team around him, so possibly he was better just doing the thinking himself.”
