Anelka brace claims Bolton victory

12 April 2012

Bolton forward Nicolas Anelka scored twice to leave his former Arsenal employers stunned following his side's 3-1 victory at the Reebok Stadium.

They were his first goals in the Barclays Premiership since his £8million move from Fenerbahce in the summer.

Abdoulaye Faye was also on target for Bolton, while Gilberto replied for Arsenal.

Bolton have leap-frogged the Gunners in the table after their fourth home win against them in five games. It is little wonder Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had a look like thunder at the end of the game.

Bolton took the lead when Arsenal were caught napping in the ninth minute. El-Hadji Diouf swung in a corner, and Abdoulaye Faye headed home at the near post for his first goal of the season.

Anelka made it 2-0 to Bolton in first-half stoppage time, with his first goal in the Premiership . It was special delivery as well. Released by Kevin Davies, he cut inside and rifled a shot into the corner from 25 yards.

However, Gilberto pulled one back for Arsenal when he headed home following a cross from Cesc Fabregas.

Freddie Ljungberg headed against the post in the 54th minute following a cross from the impressive Theo Walcott.

Anelka restored Bolton's two-goal advantage in the 75th minute with another superb strike. He showed good awareness to get on the end of a clever pass from first-half substitute Ivan Campo and leave keeper Jens Lehmann stranded with a blistering shot.

Emmanuel Adebayor almost scored a second in the 87th minute after being released by Fabregas - but his effort came back off the woodwork and the Gunners were left with nothing to show for their efforts.
