Archers grab gold

Danielle Brown, Nicky Hunt and Nichola Simpson became the first English archers for 28 years to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal on Thursday.

The English trio beat Canada 232-229 in the women's compound final at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

World number one Nicky Hunt needed an eight to clinch victory with her final arrow and came up with a 10 to spark English celebrations.

Hunt, Brown and Simpson were one point down after two of the four ends but fought back to clinch the gold.

It meant Brown, the first Paralympic archer to represent England at at Commonwealth Games, had Commonwealth gold to add to the Paralympic gold she won in Beijing in 2008.

Earlier the English trio beat Malaysia 226-221 in the semi-finals.

The Malaysians led 58-56 after the opening leg but England fought back to lead 114-112 after the second leg.

They extended their lead to 172-166 after the third leg and finished strongly to wrap up victory in the fourth and final leg.
