Former United States coach Bruce Arena believes Manchester United have struck gold by securing the services of Javier Hernandez.

Arena saw at the first hand the damage the Mexico striker can do when he scored with a superb lob against his MLS All-Stars side. It was Hernandez's first outing for the club following his arrival from Chivas Guadalajara and he helped his side to an emphatic 5-2 victory at the Reliant Stadium.

Los Angeles Galaxy coach and former national team chief Arena said: "Manchester United has a global scouting network and they know where all the great players are. They were obviously well aware of this young prospect in Mexico and they did a fabulous job to secure him at the time they did."

He added: "He is going to have a learning curve and becoming a professional in the environment of Manchester United.

"One has to believe he is going to be an outstanding player. He certainly has a bright future."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed he has no intention of sending Hernandez out on loan in his debut season in the Barclays Premier League.

Instead he has chosen the new recruit and Federico Macheda - who scored a brace against the All-Stars - as the two players to rival Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen, once fit.

Danny Welbeck and Mame Biram Diouf will go on loan to get regular games and gain further experience.

Ferguson said: "I need to keep Macheda and Hernandez. There was a lot of purpose in the way they played their football.

"To play for a club like this is not just about talent. You need something else and they've got something else. I am pleased with that."
