Arsenal snatch £10m Jeffers

13 April 2012

Everton have agreed to sell England Under-21 striker Francis Jeffers to Arsenal in a £10million deal.

The Gunners have to pay £8million up front with a further £2million to follow depending on appearances.

The Merseysiders reluctantly agreed to listen to offers for 20-year-old Jeffers when he turned down the offer of a new contract.

Newcastle were linked with the player but Jeffers has opted to join the Gunners, who will be playing Champions League football next season.

Everton had given permission for Jeffers to speak with Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, but he declined the offer of a switch to the north-east, preferring to wait for the Gunners to make their move.

Sunderland, Leeds, Tottenham and Middlesbrough had also expressed an interest in securing his signature.

The striker, who rejected the opportunity of prolonging his career at Goodison Park last month, travelled down to London this morning to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

In his short career with the club he supported as a boy, Jeffers managed to form an impressive partnership with Kevin Campbell but made less than 40 starts, scoring 20 goals in the process.

Ankle and shoulder problems limited his appearances last season to just 14.
