The world’s greatest athletes descend on Gateshead this weekend for the Diamond League.

From world record holders, to British hopes Asher-Smith, Laura Muir and Adam Gemili, there is plenty on show in front of a possible audience of 2,000.

Women’s 100m

This could prove to be the four women vying for Olympic sprint gold come Tokyo. Home hopes will rest with Dina Asher-Smith, who is up against Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the fastest woman in 2021, Sha’Carri Richardson.

Men’s pole vault

World record holder Mondo Duplantis may struggle to reach his usual heights if Sunday’s weather forecast is anything to go by, but he is up against Sam Kendricks, who pipped him to the world title in 2019. The other man on the podium that day, Piotr Lisek, also competes.

Men’s 200m

Adam Gemili has run the 200m just three times competitively since narrowly missing out on a medal at the last World Championships. He is likely to face a stiff challenge from Andre de Grasse, once earmarked as the heir apparent to Usain Bolt, and Alex Quinonez.
