Austria triumph against US

Barbara Schwartz's 4-6, 7-6, 9-7 defeat of Meghann Shaughnessy clinched a 3-2 victory for Austria over top seeds United States in their first-round Federations Cup match in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"It's unbelievable for us to win here," Schwartz said. "I knew I would have to fight for every point and take every chance."

Schwartz also beat Monica Seles on Saturday.

Austria will now host Croatia in the quarterfinals in July.

Also in the next round, defending champions Belgium will be away to Italy, Spain take on Germany and France are at home to Slovakia.
