Baggio misses out on World Cup

13 April 2012

There will be no World Cup swansong for Roberto Baggio after Giovanni Trapattoni pulled no surprises in the Italy World Cup squad announced this morning.

The Azzurri coach has called on the bulk of players who remained unbeaten throughout the qualifiers.

That meant no place for Brescia's Baggio, a veteran of the last three World Cup finals, whose season has been plagued by injuries.

However, his France '98 colleagues Angelo di Livio, 35, and Paolo Maldini, 33, will make the trip.

Trapattoni has also called on four reserves ahead of the May 21 deadline - Roma goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, Fiorentina defender Daniele Adani, midfielder Massimo Ambrosini of Milan and Parma striker Marco di Vaio.
