Barrow backs Nugent to shine

12 April 2012

David Nugent will have no problems integrating into the England set-up according to former club manager Graham Barrow.

Barrow was in charge of Nugent at League Two Bury when his 12 league goals before Christmas alerted North End, who paid £100,000 for the youngster in January 2005.

On Nugent fitting into the squad, Barrow - now assistant manager at Chester - said: "I don't think it'll be a problem because he's taken everything else in his stride."

He added: "Years back I sent him over to Manchester City and they were really pleased with him but decided not to do anything about it.

"He's never been fazed by anything like that.

"People forget it was a big step from Bury to Preston and he took that well in his stride.

"(Manager Steve) McClaren and (assistant) Terry Venables and the England players seem like a decent bunch.

"It'll help that Steven Gerrard and (Wayne) Rooney are Scousers too so I'm sure they'll look after him.

"The call-up is fully justified because he's doing the business. You always knew there was a little bit of special quality there."

Since his first months at Deepdale, Nugent, who made his Bury debut at the age of 16, has been constantly linked with moves to the Premiership.
