Barry Sheene's distinguished career

13 April 2012

* Sheene was the world 500cc motorcycling champion in 1976 and 1977 for Suzuki.

* He broke his leg, arm, collarbone, two vertebrae and ribs in a 175mph crash in Daytona in 1975.

* He was back racing within six weeks at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire with an 18-inch steel rod holding his left thigh together.

* In 1981 he became the last British racer to win a 500cc GP.

* A crash at over 160mph at Silverstone in 1982 left him with two seven-inch pillars of stainless steel, two five-inch plates and 26 steel screws in his legs and effectively ended his career.

* Sheene returned to racing in the late Nineties while in his forties, taking part in classic events.
