Beckham's plea to Sven

Man in the middle: David Beckham

David Beckham has revealed that he will ask Sven-Goran Eriksson to play him in the centre of midfield for England in Euro 2004.

The England captain has been a revelation in that position for Real Madrid, something Eriksson first encouraged him to experiment with.

Although Beckham will respect his national coach's right to use him where he wishes, their conversation will make clear the player's clear preference to run the midfield from the centre of the pitch.

He said today: "I definitely prefer this position in the centre of the midfield. I think it's obvious since I arrived in Madrid that this opportunity they've given me to prove my worth in this position has allowed me to play very well.

"Certainly I have a few exceptional players around me but I must say that in general I prefer playing in the middle.

"I would love it if I could do the same for England but that is a question for Mr Eriksson.

"I'd like to think we can win Euro 2004 and playing France in the first game will be something-extremely special. They are a great team and it's in my nature that I always like going up against the best."

In particular, he is relishing the challenge of facing teammate Zinedine Zidane.

"Zizou is a complete phenomenon, the No1 in the world," he said.

"In my opinion he is the best footballer playing. Playing with him in the same team is a real privilege because he's incredible to be near."

Beckham faces his biggest week since joining the Spanish champions with tomorrow's Madrid derby against Atletico and then Saturday's huge clash against Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

Beckham has a slight knee injury but is determined to play in both games.

Security is already at riot level for Saturday's game following death threats against the Barcelona president.

Hundreds of police will guard Beckham and his teammates as they arrive at Barcelona airport.
