Lewis Hamilton has etched his name into Formula One folklore after equalling Michael Schumacher's all-time record by securing pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix.

The triple world champion, competing in his 200th race, delivered a dominant performance to soar to the top of the order at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit and claim the 68th pole of his glittering career.

Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel, who is 14 points ahead of the Briton with nine races remaining, joined his title rival on the front row, with Valtteri Bottas in third.

Ahead of the race Schumacher’s son, Mick, completed two laps around Spa on the 25th anniversary of his dad’s first win there.

The 18-year-old, weating a specially designed helmet of one half his and one half his father's, drove a 1994-spec Benetton to commemorate his father’s first win, all the way back in 1992.

He said about getting behind the wheel: "There was not the slightest bit of doubt for me that I wanted to do this."
