Beloki moved to new hospital

14 April 2012

Joseba Beloki was today transferred by air ambulance to a hospital in Vitoria, north-east Spain, after suffering a broken right leg, wrist and elbow in a crash near the end of the ninth stage of the Tour de France.

The Spaniard, last year's runner-up and arguably the biggest threat to defending champion Lance Armstrong, fell little more than four kilometres from the finishing line at Gap.

Armstrong, 31, who had shadowed his rival all day, only narrowly avoided being caught up in the fall.

The American, bidding for a fifth Tour win, retained the race leader's yellow jersey by 21 seconds from stage winner Alexander Vinokourov, of Kazakhstan.
