Bennett back in firing line

Flashpoint: Steve Bennett sends off Francis Jeffers during the Community Shield

The referee at the centre of the controversy over Sol Campbell's violent conduct charge will officiate Sunday's clash between Manchester United and Arsenal.

Five weeks after failing to spot the Arsenal defender's kick on Eric Djemba-Djemba in the Community Shield between the same clubs, Steve Bennett will take charge of the Old Trafford clash.

In a week where referees are in the spotlight after a series of blunders, the appointment of Bennett is surprising, as Campbell's case is still to be heard.

Bennett, who also dismissed Francis Jeffers, advised the FA to look at Campbell's conduct.

The decision to appoint referees to Premiership games is made by referees' boss Phillip Don.

A spokesman said: "We do not comment on individual refereeing appointments."
