Birmingham keeper Taylor admits he turned down chance of Anfield move

Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor has admitted he turned down the chance of a move to Liverpool in favour of regular first-team football under Alex McLeish.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez wanted the Northern Ireland  international as cover  for Pepe Reina next season.

But with Scott Carson also returning to Liverpool after a season’s loan at Aston Villa, Taylor said he did not relish a season on the fringes of the squad.

Birmingham's keeper Maik Taylor said he turned down the chance of a move to Liverpool

He decided to sign a new two-year contract with Birmingham last week despite their  relegation to the Championship.

“It was flattering that Liverpool showed a lot of interest and of course I gave it some serious consideration,”  said Taylor, 36, who was also a target  for Everton and Stoke City.

“But  with an offer on the table from Birmingham it was always going to be the case  that I would stay.

“Liverpool offer the Champions League and everything else but it would have  been a situation as a No.2 goalkeeper and on a one-year contract.

“Scott Carson has gone back there now, there was talk of him going to Villa  after his loan but that has not materialised. I still have a big desire to play and as long as I keep my form and fitness, that’s more likely at  Birmingham.”
