Blake out as Nadal and Roddick advance

12 April 2012

Third seed Andy Roddick eased into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Martin Vassallo Arguello in Miami.

Roddick converted all three crucial break opportunities as the American set-up a third-round meeting with 32nd seed Gilles Simon after coming through the contest in just over one hour. Simon disposed of Luis Horna in straight sets with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) triumph.

American James Blake lost in three sets to France's Floren Serra, while fellow seeds Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray eased through their opening contests in Miami.

Murray continued his excellent early season form with a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory over American Paul Goldstein in the second round, while Nadal beat Brazil's Ricardo Mello 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.

Blake, the eighth-seed, hit back after dropping the first set on a tie-break but Serra raised his game once more to clinch a 7-6 (10-8) 2-6 6-3 victory.

Serra will face Feliciano Lopez after the Spanish qualifier beat two time grand slam winner Marat Safin 7-5 7-6 (7-2), while Nadal will meet Olivier Rochus.

Belgian Olivier Rochus recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while thirteenth seed David Ferrer had few problems in seeing off Juan Monaco 6-2 6-2.

Murray, the 12th seed, will face lucky loser Robert Kendrick in the next round.

The American beat qualifier Raemon Sluiter 6-2 6-4, while Michael Llodra, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Simone Bolelli are also through to the third round after beating seeded players. Llodra beat 22nd seed Dominik Hrbaty 6-3 6-2, Mathieu defeated 26th seed Jurgen Melzer 6-0 7-5 and Italian qualifier Bolelli beat 21st seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-7 (0-7) 6-3 6-4.

Mathieu will face Chile's Fernando Gonzalez in the next round after the Australian Open finalist beat wildcard Thomas Johansson 7-5 6-3, while Llodra will face Novak Djokovic after the 10th seed beat Italian Daniele Bracciali 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
