Cardiff Blues have released Andy Powell after accusing the Wales and Lions back row of "losing his way".

The 28-year-old's contract was due to expire in 2012 but he leaves with the blessing of the Amlin Challenge Cup champions, who he joined five years ago.

In 2008 he made his Test debut and has gone on to win 14 caps, but he was suspended by Wales during this year's RBS 6 Nations following an incident that catapulted him into the headlines. Just hours after helping Wales complete a stunning comeback victory against Scotland, he was arrested for and admitted to driving a golf buggy on the M4 while drunk.

Wales coach Warren Gatland selected Powell for the summer tour to New Zealand but his hopes of participating in the Tests were ended by a thigh problem.

He is now on the verge of joining another club with Wasps the favourites to sign the bulldozing number eight.

Blues director of rugby David Young revealed the decision to allow Powell to leave was favoured by club and player.

Young said: "When he's fully focused Andy is one of the best back row forwards in the country, as he showed when he was deservedly called up to represent his country and the Lions during his time with the Blues.

"However, it's fair to say this last season has been a difficult one for Andy following the unwise incident with the golf buggy and he has lost his way somewhat.

"Both parties felt it was in the best interests of the region and Andy if we parted company and we wish him well with his future rugby career."
