Carlos Bocanegra has joined French side Rennes after being released by Fulham.

The 29-year-old United States international defender played 116 times for Fulham after signing from Chicago Fire in 2004 but has agreed a three-year deal with Rennes.

Bocanegra hopes to help the French side qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

He said: 'I hope the club will finish above the sixth spot obtained last season.

'I even think the team can reach the Champions League. It would be fantastic.

'I know the club followed me several times with Fulham and with the US squad.

'I wanted to play in another league than the English one after five years spent at Fulham. I like the French League. It's a high level and highly-rated competition.'
