Bopara: I want the number three slot

12 April 2012

Ravi Bopara put down a marker for Ashes selection later this summer with his second Test hundred in as many innings in the opening match of the international summer.

Bopara will today attempt to develop his unbeaten 118 against West Indies at Lord's into something more sizeable as England attempt to swell their overnight 289 for seven into a total of around 400.

"I hope I go into the next Test batting at three, and for the Ashes, and the whole summer," said Bopara.

"It is a big thing for me and I am looking forward to it.

"It's a good start for me, I wasn't thinking too much about things over the last couple of days. I have felt very relaxed."

Bopara, dropped after his hundred in Barbados in March due to a change of team composition, took advantage of being dropped on 76 after lamely turning to Brendan Nash at square-leg off Fidel Edwards.

"It is not my fault I get dropped," Bopara said. "I just have to take advantage of it. I was about to turn around and walk off. It caught me by surprise that he dropped it."

Bopara reached three figures 13 overs from the close and acknowledged his landmark with a sign to write his name on the famous honour's board at the ground.

"I am really proud," he said. "When you come to Lord's to play county matches, you wonder if your name will ever be up there.

"I have always wanted to test myself as to where I am in my game and that's the best test I have had so far."
