Brazil to officialise bid

12 April 2012

The Brazil Football Confederation has confirmed that the country will officially apply to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Globo Esporte show on TV Globo, president, Ricardo Teixeira confirmed the application for football's showpiece event.

"On Wednesday we'll enter our bid to host the World Cup. That actually is also the will of Brazilian people," he said.

Teixeira is due to meet FIFA officials in Tokyo, Japan, where he is watching the FIFA Club World Cup and his Brazilian representative team, Internacional.

"Wednesday will be a day in which we will celebrate twice," he said. "Inter will claim victory (against Egypt's Al Ahly in the semi-final) and we will begin our journey towards the 2014 World Cup."

Brazil wants to host their first World Cup in 64 years, following the tournament played in 1950, the first tournament after World War II.

Brazil surprisingly lost 2-1 to Uruguay in the final at Maracana.
