Brendon McCullum's relief after shock win

13 April 2012

Defiant half-centuries from Brendon McCullum and Brad Hodge took the Kolkata Knight Riders to a shock seven-wicket victory off the last ball against the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

McCullum, who has struggled in the tournament, opened the innings as Kolkata chased a stiff target of 189, and the New Zealander raced to his 50 off just 21 balls.

The Kolkata captain was eventually bowled by left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati for 81 but Hodge took up the mantle in Johannesburg and was undefeated with 71 off 44 balls.

Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha played a supporting role with an unbeaten 25 off 13 balls as Kolkata scored the last of the six runs they needed off the final delivery.

The victory was just the second in 13 matches for Kolkata, while Chennai could now miss out on the semi-finals.

McCulluam said: "I am so pleased for the guys. It's been a hell of a ride."
