Broady flying flag for Britain

Liam Broady will hope to give British fans something to cheer after Andy Murray's semi-final exit from Wimbledon when he takes to Court One for the boys' singles final on Saturday.

Broady is confident of becoming the first British winner of the crown since Stanley Matthews in 1962 after beating former junior world number one Jason Kubler 6-4 6-3 on Friday, and he will go into the final against another Australian, Luke Saville, as the favourite.

The Stockport player said of Saville, who is also 17: "I played him last in under-14s, so it was a long time ago and things change. I've seen him play a few times. Obviously he's a very good player."

He added: "Hopefully if I bring my game out, I'll be able to do some damage again. I always go on court expecting to win, no matter who against. I think I've got a very good chance if I play well."

Broady plays outside the Lawn Tennis Association system and is supported by dad Simon, who has guided the career of both him and sister Naomi, the British women's number four.

Victory would be a significant achievement for Broady senior as well, and the teenager said: "I've been playing since I was four. Obviously I'm his son so he's given me everything. I'm where I am today because of him. It would be great to win it."

Broady is certainly the form player in the junior game after winning the warm-up event at Roehampton last week, and victory on Saturday would make it 12 in a row. Two of those have come against world junior number one Jiri Vesely, something Broady has taken a lot of confidence from.

He said: "It gave me some real belief. I beat him for the first time there (Roehampton). That's when I started to think I could actually do some damage at these tournaments."

This will not be a first Wimbledon final for the 17-year-old, who already has a trophy at home after winning the doubles title last year with Tom Farquharson.

He feels that experience will help, adding: "I think 100% it can do because obviously otherwise I wouldn't have got a chance to play on Court One. I'm hoping it's going to be a great crowd like last year as well."
